Counsellor Joanna Copeland Butt

Hi, I’m Joanna.

I am a master’s level Registered Clinical Counsellor in practice since 2015. Working in the private business for 28 years I was unhappy and felt stuck began a journey to discover my life purpose, heal trauma and find more balance. I soon realized that I could help people in a deeper, more meaningful way which led me to the field of counselling.

I am honoured to work with individual, adult clients with anxiety, trauma, ADHD, addiction issues or who are the adult children of emotionally immature parents who want to overcome difficult experiences and relationships and see how they can change their life with compassionate support.

With degrees from Gonzaga University and Memorial University of Newfoundland, my practice is informed by trauma informed practice, cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), dialectical behaviour therapy (DBT), interpersonal neurobiology, polyvagal theory, internal family systems (IFS), among other modalities. My professional counselling experience includes working in a residential treatment center for over five years.

My practice is informed by compassionate curiosity and a client centered approach that is a blend of heart and science.

My goal is to create a safe, comfy, non-judgmental environment where people feel heard, understood, and respected for who they are. Clients describe me as kind, validating, direct and not superficial.

Together we can look at your life and find what is working well already and what you want to change. We can explore past experiences to find blind spots or unhelpful patterns; help you learn how to be kinder to yourself and find a perspective about yourself and the world that is realistic but reduces worry and distress. Using a variety of evidence-based theories and skills that fit your needs, we will work at a pace that is comfortable for you, then helps you feel calmer and more in control.

When not at work, I love to walk my dog, bake, paint rocks and paddleboard on our beautiful mountain lakes.
