Counsellors Need Master’s Degrees. Good Intentions Are Not Enough.

August 5, 2024

Here is information about counselling in BC in 2026:

  • Counselling is NOT YET regulated so there are no education requirements or standards.
  • ANYONE can call themself a counsellor, including you.
  • If you choose a “counsellor” who does not have a master’s degree your receipt may not be reimbursed by your benefits provider because most insurers require a master’s degree.

What you don’t know can hurt you.

When choosing a mental health professional to work with please be sure that this clinician:

  • Has attained at least a master’s degree from an accredited university, which is displayed in their office.
  • Is registered, in good standing, with a professional association that has enforceable standards of ethical practice and a code of ethical conduct.
  • Uses evidence-based practices and consistently upgrades their training.
  • Is insured with adequate liability insurance, in good standing.

You have the right to know this information before counselling starts. Ethical counsellors have a responsibility to disclose their level of education and training before counselling begins so you can make an informed decision about your care.

Be sure your counsellor has at least a master’s degree and additional professional training before you book the first session.

Read more about the College of Health Professionals of BC which counsellors will join in November 2027 below. Counsellors who are a member of this College will then be referred to as Psychotherapists, in keeping with the professional title held in most other provinces. This will help consumers identify the level of education, training and ethical practice when choosing mental health supports.
